Because Kyu is as intelligent as him without being him, and he hadn't realised there could be any other way of being a genuis before meeting him.
Because although he suspects that Kyu doesn't need him, he knows that Kyu wants him. And although the second is infinitely more fragile and precarious than the first Ryu thinks it might be the more precious.
