So [livejournal.com profile] lycoris stayed over last night which was awesome and we had long and weird conversations that only two people with similar slightly twisted worldviews who are hyper on overtired can have, and we watched a lot of stuff.

Well, we watched a lot of episodes. We watched two shows. Live Action Sailor Moon and Old Who.

(Who was awesome we watched Warriors of the Deep which was Fifth Doctor with Turlough running around with a gun! There was also a sea monster thing. Murta? It looked like a pantomime horse. There was also a bit where Tegan got trapped under a very heavy really door. That wobbled.)

And then tonight. I came back. Fiddled with some work. Looked dolefully at the last episode of Legend. Then thought - 'hey, I wonder if jdramas has Kamen Rider Kabuto up?

...

it does.

*See, I have this thing I do. I absolutly GORGE myself on a series and I love it to pieces and I don't let the episodes have time to rest from downloading before watching them. Then I come to the last episode. I stop. I eye it warily. I invent procrastination. I fret and chew my finger nails.

Finally weeks later I pluck up the courage to watch it. (Because once I watched it it's ooooooover.)

Huh. Don't believe I knew you liked tokusatsu. Out of curiosity, is Ultraman Moebius on your radar?

*cautiously* it has a fancy japanese name? What does fancy japanese name mean? I like to point and laugh at the silly costumes and then get teary eyed over the people in the silly costumes.

...

So, Ultraman Moebius? What's that about?

(This is the UNIVERSE getting REVENGE on me for turning my nose up at Power Rangers when I was SEVEN.)

"Tokusatsu" just means "special effects" but is usually used to refer more broadly to the rubber suit monster genre... Godzilla, Kamen Rider, the Ranger series, Ultraman, live action Sailor Moon, etcetera.

Ultraman Moebius is... mm, no longer the most recent Ultraman series, but one of the more recent ones. It's about a rookie Ultra who has been sent to Earth pretty much fresh out of academy, to (1) defend the Earth against a new wave of attacking monsters [the first in 25 years], and (2) get some seasoning under his belt. He's very young and earnest and masquerades as a human named Mirai Hibino, a member of the Japanese branch of the Earth defense force. A large part of the show is Moebius learning how to be human, and that being a hero takes a lot more than just fighting the monsters. Another large part is that UM is the 40th anniversary production of Ultraman so it draws a lot on past Ultraman mythologies and characters and has very high production values all around.

UM is one of my three favorite toku series ever (the other two being Kamen Rider Kuuga and Kamen Rider Agito) and I'm actually part of [livejournal.com profile] fushigichan, the group currently subtitling it. ^_^;; Self-promotion aside, though, it really is a show worth checking out.
