"Do you intend for us still to be here next year?" Yuuko asked archly as Clow gave the box another little shake.
"I believe you're doing this the wrong way around," Clow replied mildly. "The one whose birthday it is is supposed to be the impatient one."
Yuuko snorted, trying not to show too much expectant glee. "At least try not to be pedantic "I'm the one who's indulging you in this decadent Western custom after all."
"And of course you won't be expecting similar returns," Clow murmured.
Yuuko gave him a saccharine smile. "Proper trade should always be encouraged."
The return smile Clow gave her was slightly dry as he finally stopped playing with it and ripped open the wrapping paper. Yuuko tensed expectantly.
"Why Yuuko," Clow breathed, lifting the hat that had put Yuuko in mind of a fungus festooned mushroom from its box. "It's wonderful!"
Yuuko's grin froze. "What?"
"It's just what I always wanted," Clow continued happily, trying it on. "Do you have a mirror?"
Then the bastard wore it to the annual convention of Wizards. And informed anyone who looked at him sideways (which was everyone) that it was a gift from the Dimensional Witch.
The bottle of hundred year old elven red he got her for her birthday was, she felt, just rubbing it in.
There's a tiny drawing pretty early on (volume 1 or 2, I think) with three people in similar outfits, when Kero is explaining about how magic was passed on or something like that. And you get a similar sleeve when Kero tells Sakura how to use the Cards for divination. Then it shows up in that picture, and never again... I wonder if they just changed their minds about the design.
(No, I totally didn't search for every tiny reference while I was writing my reflections_2 essay, why would you ask?)
Those little references to a larger magical community really intrigue me, because we never really get anymore information on this wider back story in CCS. The whole story is really very insulated - very narrowly focused on Sakura's personal experiences, rather then the effects of the reappearance of Clow's magic on a terrorised community that had just begun to breathe easily again! :DD
Reason #4653 to write Harry Potter crossovers... :P
Seriously, though - that's one of the things I love in HOLiC. It helps to put everything in a larger context. We get to see a larger community of magical people and other beings, while in CCS we had only Tomoeda and that was basically Clow's playground.
Yep! *nods happily* It really makes me wonder what the effect of Clow's death would have had on the community as a whole - the sudden disappearance of such a huge power, and such a powerful personality, must have caused a huge disruption.
Well, I suppose we've seen one effect in Tsubasa with Fei Wong getting too big for his boots.
I can't stop wondering (and sometimes worrying about) what will CLAMP do with Fei Wang. He could turn out to be either amazing backstory or a giant fan-eating plothole.
I don't think I've seen a single piece of fanfiction written on Fei Wang, or even including him as a minor character. That really tells you where he stands in the scale of Clamp villains. I'm hoping for some complicated backstory involving Clow and Yuuko that will actually make his chracter interesting. But most likely he's Clamp's paper thin excuse to have a grand time drawing bad fanfiction.
At this point, I'm just hoping that whatever is revealed about him doesn't contradict what we learned about Clow in CCS. Tsubasa has enough of that already... (Sakura and Shaoran are Meant To Be? Really? And you expected her to end up with Yukito how?)
I know! That was one of my favourite bits of characterisation - that Clow was wrong, that he could be wrong. That he got what he most wanted. That after death he managed to be surprised.
I like to think it was ClowKingdom Clow who gave them the tipoff about that Syaroan and Sakura being destined for each other, while CCS!Clow continued stubbornly in his own beliefs regarding CCS!Sakura. Although Clamp already had a plothole in that area. If Clow thought Sakura and Yukito were going to end up together, he couldn't have known about Yukito and Touya. So who did he expect Yukito/Yue to survive when his power was fading?
And that he was dense about relationships like 99% of his derivates!
I suppose he could have known that Touya would give his power to Yue, without interpreting as romantic love - you don't let your best friend die if you can avoid it, even if you're not in love with him. Then again, Touya/Yukito seems to be another Constant of the Multiverse, so... *sigh* (Not that I don't love to see them show up everywhere, of course.)
I like the idea of the other Clow telling them about it. Might not happen in canon, but it's a great plothole-solver for fic.
