Back home now from trip to London with the family - actually a much delayed birthday trip for me and my dad, delayed due to unforseeable circumstances (read: my mum falling down the stairs, injuring her leg, then walking around on it for a week before family, colleagues, friends, boss, and nurse managed to convince her to go to the hospital. Where the doctor went London? Walking? Rly? Uh, no, and sentenced her to a week on the sofa.)
*cough*
Anyway it was well worth the wait. (Once we had dealt with the hotel loosing our bookings...)Then it was on to acting like total tourists!
We visited Harrods and stared at all the pretty (expensive) things and didn't buy anything, walked around Westminster and saw the Houses of Parliament, the Changing of the Guard, Number 10 Downing Street... Then we went on the London Eye and saw it all again from a much higher perspective. *grin*
We went to the National Portrait Gallery to see an exhibition of portraits that they thought might have been Shakespeare, and of course the London Forbidden Planet at which I got volumes five and six of XXXholix (kuda-kitsune ♥♥,) and The Vor Game by Lois McMaster Bujold which is almost impossible to find and I am far too pleased about it. Now I only need A Civil Campaign...
We visited Kensington Palace and saw the exhibition of Diana's dresses, then walked up through the state rooms, which in older times you'd have to pass through in order to be admitted to the King's presence. And you'd only make it through all the rooms if your dress was appropriate and your rank high enough. They had exhibitions of formal court dress as well. Then we walked through Princess Margaret's old apartment, which was a lot shabbier than you'd expect.
We also went to see two West End musicals; on the first night we saw the Producers and almost killed ourselves laughing. Just take the film and multiply it by about ten times, adding all the offensive stuff and the spectacle of the stage show. (and I've been humming "keep it pretty, keep it witty, keep it ga~ay," since. Doesn't help that it's the only line I can remember...)
On the second night we saw Mary Poppins. Which was gorgeus and Mary was so much sharper edged than in Disney and the toy song was freaking scary and Burt/Mary otp!! ♥
And now the relatives have just arrived for Easter and I have got to go be sociable. T_T But all the shiny new anime has been subbed while I was away...
